cup

by Glenn Currier

I am a full cup
running over with who I am.
I am an empty cup
upright and open
ready to receive drops,
thirsty.

but then...
I am an American:
always get full.
empty is not good.
run fastest
don't just walk.
jump highest
not just stand.
shout
not just speak.
speak
not just listen.

being empty
receiving drops
while being American
is hard.

*soft smile*.... oh that tongue in cheek humor. Yes... you hit the nail on the head, or pinged the cup on the rim... You say it soo well Glenn I was looking for a smile and found it, even if it was a self depreciating one. Well Done!

America's a big place in such a small world - I feel an identity crisis coming on... :)

There is so much said in this piece that I find it hard to articulate it. In fact, that is probably why we write potery, to write something that is hard to articulate otherwise. Touching verse that says so much.

My cup is half empty/full and my wife knows it depends upon my mood. Good writeI've said before that if you want to see the American soul just watch them drive. There is no consideration for the "other", they have no use for turn signals, and they don't read speed limit or stop signs. No wonder we have no respect for people in other countries. They aren't like us!!!
