Midnight Lake

by Amy Niggel

The scent of rain still heavy in the late summer air
and thunder still plays at the feet of the mountains
and there beyond the guard rail lies the water herself
darker than any shade of black
deeper than any love, no matter how true
folding and unfolding her arms upon herself
restless in her nightgown
only God may know the dreams of His child
she tosses and turns in her bed
throwing herself upon the mercy of the shore
begging for respite and finding only turmoil
the sky weeps for her
adding to her depth
and her darkness
alone on her shore a woman is crying
alone on her shore a man is weeping
this midnight lake is not for lovers
she is far too jealous
far too restless
she shall never bring together
she can only tear apart.

Author's Note: This kinda came out of a late night ride on a Lake Champlain Ferry. The black water looked so unsteady, so inviting and yet deadly it just seemed right it should be a jealous female I guess.

I'd say you were dead on in your interpretation of the Lake. Nice imagery in there too. Very good read.

"folding and unfolding her arms upon herself" - a brilliant line that lets me see waves in a unique way. "throwing herself upon the mercy of the shore" is another great line. Into my favorites. Congrats on POTD!

somehow i'd forgotten quite how amazing this is. so very atmospheric. you've painted a picture in shades of black, somehow. marvellous stuff. :)
