This Ornamentation is Alive (lest we ignore and it dies)

by Lacy D Phillips

Pansies push their searching violet faces toward the shade

under industrial monuments of steel and slate.

Rain cannot blur the line between gardening and corporate landscape,

precious little attention spared for the land we take.

Dwarfed trees and shrubbery stunted by stone,

Containerized perennials that stand alone.

Vines reach for passing pantlegs and cell phones.

Well-groomed and watered, but cared for by none.

Screaming, Hybridized:

"We are alive, ALIVE!"
