I Love What You've Done With Your Hair

by Alison McKenzie

Once upon a time
There was a boy with a crew cut.
Lord, but he was full of bawdy ego,
Know-it-all proclamations
That took him everywhere
And nowhere
All at once.

After a time,
Maturity lent its stylish advice
And another do emerged, but was
Quickly caught up to speed
With razor sharp edges
And gel.
No breath of fresh wind
Allowed to touch that scalp
By God.
Stiff and untouchable.

When age itself stepped in
Strands (and stands) began to fall right out
Exposing bits of scalp
To the scathing radiation of every day.
Gel be cursed, it didn’t work anymore
To keep the insane or violent filaments secure.

Today I love your hair!
Soft and wispy
But present.
Wild, unruly locks silenced,
Older and wiser tufts
Commanding the new regime;
New growth, like miracles being born.

I love what you’ve done with your hair.

fantastic concept. reminds me slight of one of my poems ['a hair cut' - in 2003 i think], but yeah. the line 'everywhere and nowhere all at once' made me smile. superb poem.

Very fun progression of life and what we do with our hair along the way.
