topic: insects and popcorn

by Rachelle Howe

i've scaled the childhood staircase,
feet tentative and absent.
my shoes had outgrown
their laces last year and i
had tossed them
by the side of the road.

my hands glanced
through my hair as i
surveyed the crowds below.
i'd chosen the highest seat,
there on my mountain,
while the towns people -- such insects --
scurry and marry about.

they've been
throwing stones like popcorn,
their apathy's coming
when they see me with long sleeves.

"you shouldn't do that to yourself,
shouldn't tear flesh when
you could tear out eyes instead."

and they judge,
THEY JUDGE, could you believe it?
could you tell that
their righteousness
was in prophetic whores and
dream catchers?

they had wandered
through the wilderness, and
while professing their holy of holies,
faith had been long squandered.

Written for & as? Reads like regression though the scurrying complements and contrasts marry ingenuity and ingenuousness - An intriguing and appetising extended metaphor.
Am I talking out of my ass? I don't think so...but then, what do I know?

Well worded reminder that it's only when we observe humanity from some distance that we see some of its members hypocrisy/shortcomings.
