“Coffee’s On”

by Mary Ellen Smith

rabbit slippers shuffle a morning song.
my eyes are glued shut and like a horse that returns to the barn
I instinctively go to the cupboard where the coffee is waiting.

sun is trying to sneak into the kitchen.
little slivers of it slash across the countertop
razor sharp, it cuts whats left of the night to shreds.

yawn and stretch.
bad idea.
for a moment every bone in my body, locked.
a painful contortion of comedic proportions.

COFFEE……

I spoon out the rich dark blend
into its little white paper bed and tuck it gently in.

flip the switch.

uncivilized mornings like this are tamed soon enough.

“Coffee’s on.”

An a avowed coffee drinker I really enjoyed this Mary Ellen. Wonderful expresion mounted on crisp images and wry humor. Excellent finish up in those last four lines. One small point, should the last line in the first stanza read go 'to' the cupboard?

I love your "rabbit" slippers and your morning shuffle. I love how your bring "real" life to poetry so easily.

The sun that "cuts whats left of the night to shreds", the coffee that you put "into its little white paper bed and tuck it gently in".... Really wonderful images here and great, amusing description. I'm not a coffee drinker, but you've perfectly conveyed what it does for you in the morning - you've brewed a fine poem here! d:-)
