The Wooden Boy on the Shelf

by Jon-Jacob F Deal

I am the wooden boy on the shelf
You take me down when you're tired of all else
Hey! dust me off, Ho! pull my string
Don't I still say the darndest things?
And when my cord from your finger unwraps,
It crawls back in and you put me back
To find amusement in everything else--
I am just the wooden boy on the shelf.

Quite the impactful piece of poetry. Although rhyme can sometimes be a dangerous thing to work with as it leads to forced words unrelated to the main idea, it works quite effectively here in bringing out the sadness of the subject. Kudos!
