pedestrian terrain.

by Andrew S Adams

the streets are hot from a relenteless sun
abusing them, and their asphalt is to blame.
as i walk upon this scorched ground,
i walk with others who damn the ground
but shouldn't they be damning the sun?

or, should they damn the car that needs the road
that takes us to where we go?
nah. that would just be silly.

so for now, maybe the sun is our greatest option-
but i am content. content to walk down the street
where no others shall pass-
me and the ones i love, the ones
who are fearless and walk with no qualms
about how their feet are being burned;

they thank the sun, hate the cars,
and wonder why the road must exist.

as we walk down this road,
we veer farther and farther off the path,
until we have reached another-
entirely independant-
roadway for these cars to pass along.

and here too, are the folk damning the sun.

i was happier being lost in the wilderness
the sun, beating down and creating a heatstroke
mentality- and where by the charming creek,
nestled under the shade in the trees-
my fellows and i will pause, breathe.

and i sit there, contemplating things;
in love with the sun, decrying the cars
and wondering why the road must exist,
if feeling this lost is so supremely better.
