Lay Me Down

by Alison McKenzie

No one knows
The shade of pain
Nor rosey lips
Nor soothing rain
That fell the day
I laid to rest
My baby boy that day

No one hears
The distant cries
Nor cooing laugh
Nor alibis
I try to give
To no avail
I let him slip away

No one feels
The guilty beat
Of daily life
I gaily meet
I miss him so
How did I fail
To keep his death at bay

Inside my dreams
He’s next to me
I feel him breathing
Peacefully
I stroke his hair
I keep him near
Inside my dreams, he stays

O gaping wound
Of vacuum’d air
Incessant mantra
Ceaseless prayer
Lord, lay me down
Yes, lay me down
Lord, lay me down today

I have a son of my own and can't even imagine the pain.. This poem cries and weeps throughout every line.. heart-wrenching!

I cannot imagine the pain of losing a child...*HUGS*. As always, you've done a fabulous job telling your story.
