Body Snatchers

by Bruce W Niedt

The scariest movie I ever saw as a child

was Invasion of the Body Snatchers,

the original, in black-and-white,

with Kevin McCarthy and Beverly Garland.

Like so many movies of the era,

it’s about strange occurrences in a small town:

People are changing.  They don’t seem themselves.

They are devoid of emotion.  As it turns out,

aliens are planting seed pods, where homunculi grow,

legume humans in a milky juice,

beings that take over when you go to sleep,

assuming your consciousness, not your emotions,

their plan, as always, to take over the world.

And, in the end, the only man left, the town doctor,

knows this horrible secret.  He’s standing

in the middle of the road as cars whiz by,

and he’s screaming like a paranoid,

“You fools!  Can’t you see?

They’re everywhere!  You’re next!”

It’s a scary thing to have your identity stolen.

And it’s happening today,

only with computers, not seed pods.

And you’re next.

Mmmooohahaha...you mean you're next Mr. Niedt. I'm already one of them. Kidding aside, yes great movie. I enjoyed the remake with Donald Sutherland even more. Some great flicks came out of that Cold War paranoia. :o)

Ah yes I too liked the remake with Donald Sutherland, that version ruled! *chills up spine* And in the end there was no escape was there? And the man who knows and warns has not a leg to stand on amidst the turning of tides...the 'change'...and though the Internet facilitates such identity crisis, I still feel that we ourselves are searching out mediums through which to escape from ourselves, distorting our own identities for the sake of avoidance...the technology enables us to easily look away from our own faces...and even though I agree with James that the 'narrative devices employed' were not so captivating I must admit the subject did indeed have me hooked! :-)
