Slight Tragedy by Amy WustrinIt was only a slight tragedy
Lost amid the fantasy and adventure
Of lost boys and pirate ships
Indians and mermaids
In that moment just before
The colors go on fire
When wendy found neverland
With her eyes shut tight
She let that boy get his pixie dust all over her
And carry her away
They rode on the Wind's back
Heading in no particular direction
Just enjoying the ride
"Second star to the right,' he said
"And straight on till morning."
And she believed in him always
She knew old Hook would never catch him
She knew he would always OWN that island
She knew he would always come for her
Every spring, he promised
And the girl, Wendy, always believed
But the years came and went,
it is written,
Without bringing the careless boy
And try as she might
She just couldnt stay a girl forever
Year after year, waiting by that nursery window
For a pirate ship to pull up
On the nearest cloud
Year after year, watching the
Girl who would never forget
Make way for the
Woman who could scarcely recall
It wasnt until he was dust
In a box where she kept her whole youth
That he finally went back to that nursery window
And, of course, this crowing, conceited boy
Expected she'd be ready for him
It was only a slight tragedy
When Wendy faced Peter
as a grown woman
as a mother
It was only a slight tragedy
When they became lost to each other
"No, Peter," her voice trembling,
"Don't waste your fairy dust on me."
She walked out on him then
To tend to her husband
And when he bent his knee
And cried-poor boy, who neglected
his "mother" then lost her-
A little voice from the bed stirred
She knew who he was
She knew why he had come
She had been waiting
Almost as long as her mother
She believed in him
In fairies and mermaids
Pirates and Indians and Islands in the sky
Where time stood still
And children were forever at play
She believed he would
Always come for her
And that, even if she could never
Make her youth last for always
She Believed that she could make
Peter be a man.
Just like Wendy did.
But everybody knows...
All children
~except for one~
grow up
It was only a slight tragedy
Lost amid chasing the stars
And saving the day
And waving good-bye,
not knowing it was forever,
That HE would be the one she loved 05/29/2004 Posted on 05/29/2004 Copyright © 2025 Amy Wustrin
