No Apologies

by Amy Wustrin

Miles and trials

And beautiful tragedies

And ordinary miracles

We went everywhere

We did everything

And we offered no apologies for any of it

Who never felt the urge to glorify their sordid past

Never lived anyway

But I've been blessed with a million lifetimes

In twently and three-quarters years

Smoking in the girls room be for that loooong bus ride

And then there was that long bus ride

(Made bearable by the smoking)

Finding a home away from home

~In a Naval training center in Chicago

~In an Army bootcamp in New Jersey

~In each other

Passing around boys from one girl to the next

Like a tribal mating ritual unique to our clan

Finding first love on the way home from a Drill Meet

And having no regrets when all was said and done

Extreme joy

Intense sorrow

Limitless possibilities

We offered no apologies

And we never, ever should.
