Happy Anniversay (And Pardon My Flag-Waving)

by Amy Wustrin

This city had a smile

Miles long and stunning

And she lit up this whole country's face

She offered this world a beauty

unquestionable, unparalleled

And her prosperity,

her liberty, her cheer

Struck an angry chord

in the hearts of evil, envious men

So they plotted

and they planned

Like theives itching to pull off

the jewel heist of a century

That had only just begun

To diminish her beauty

they knocked out her front teeth

To threaten her liberty

they punched holes to weaken her defenses

And to steal her joy

they left terror and uncertainty in her very heart...

Her people

But America..........The Beautiful (Never Forget)

she is not vain or self-pitying

Like the men who violated her

So she smiles on through her city

showing her strength and pride

Through her vulnerability

They said America

is selfish

But proved instead

how generous she is

They wanted to show her to be

arrogant, irrational, and violent

(yes, just like them)

But instead she showed the world

that she is humble and patient

And capable of enormous restraint

when her wrath could be mighty and merciless

But a battered housewife will only wait

so long for the system to work with her

Before the welfare of her children rises above

family court proceedings

Or international law

and she has to take matters into her own hands

To protect them

So America is hunting her assailants down

and one by one

She.

Will.

Have.

Her.

Justice.
