Lessons in Hitchhiking

by Mainon A Schwartz

I would believe it if someone told me his ancestors owned slaves.

He seems disturbingly pleased
to be driving beside a girl thirty years his junior.

I would believe it if someone told me he owned a sweatshop in Indonesia.

He seems disturbingly sure
that I am available for hire at fifty cents an hour.

There is a lull in the conversation.
I am not going to fill it;
I will not be what he expects.

He can imagine his strength as he will, but
my force lies in dispassioned expression and lazy eyes.

He will wilt when he realizes
I have barely noticed his tactics of intimidation.

Indifference is the new face of heroism.

Author's Note: I despise being treated like I'm there for other people's amusement.

Captivating and unique way of expressing your displeasure.
