Just cloaked in black

by Anne Howe

They stood tall and black
Headless and limbless
Just cloaked in black
Not threatening or scary
Surprisingly
Just there
Tall and black

There was no sound
No real death or life
They just stood there
Tall and black
Headless and limbless
Just cloaked in black

Tall and black they stood
Against the curtain
I could see them
But you wouldn’t have
Cloaked in black they stood
For only me to see

Headless and limbless
Just cloaked in black
Not threatening or scary
Just cloaked in black
Against the curtain
I just turned over
And went to sleep

In the morning they were gone
No more against the curtain
Cloaked in black they had disappeared
For they were never really there
Just one of those moments
Of my mind’s own making
Not threatening or scary
Just cloaked in black

Some days can be very black. Glad you are better. Well written...Charlie

Kind of reminds me of the shadow people. Some malevolent, others benevolent. Fortunately, yours seem to have been the latter.

You have vividly portrayed one of those moments of between waking and sleeping I think! Glad it was not disconcerting!

There's a sophisticated, yet primitive beat to this poem that I like very much. Wonderful experience.

A well-captured scene, perhaps of shadow tricks in the night of a sleepy mind. Great to see this from you!

I liked the repetitive cadance to the poem as well...it was dreamlike..very creative!
