Jelly Beans and Ju-Jubes

by Maureen Glaude

pass around the jelly beans
or ju-jubes
and you’ll soon encounter
the candy connoisseurs

people who take pride in
their precise predispositions
and expound in lengthy testimonials on
their preferences in these

some strongly prejudiced against
or for the blacks and reds
will pick their way through
to leave the "undesirables"
in a neglected pile, deserted

some will compete for the highest
in their esteem
with the valor of a Knight in Armor
jousting for his Lady’s love

and then there are those who’ll proclaim
to the provider
hey, these are the “real” thing
not the poorer imitations

As if!

so when you pass around the jelly beans
or ju-jubes (and sneak a few yourself
or horde a few of your favorites)
be ready for more than
just a flavor outburst

Tangly morsel of writing Mo. I've never been much of a candy person, except for chocolate, and nowadays only to satisfy an occasional craving. Thanks though for the morning sweets.

A most interesting observation of the human condition! It is an observable condition that is almost universal! Now what are the psychological reasons for the choices? Or is it just a matter of taste (double meaning here). :)
