some nights are just lonely

by Lauren Pearl

some nights are just lonely: i’ll
stare at the sky for hours with hope
that one day i’ll be in love underneath
its heightening glare as I watch instead
my friend and her lover cuddle, caress, and
shake so softly against this cold april eve.

i miss you more tonight, with every
gentle buzz of some nightmoth’s wings
and every rustle of the feverish wind
as it picks up and throws away my dreams
with what’s left of winter’s dead things,
discarding them just arms length away.

i’d wish upon the stars for your return
but i gave up on such silly things long
ago and if I have learned anything,
it’s that sometimes, some dreams are
meant to be shattered (did I mention, also,
that some kisses were meant?) they were.

the moon tonight is big and foreboding
as it anticipates your return, it’s most beautiful
now, yellow and lopsided and wilting,
almost crying as I whisk away tears from
my own cheek, but who else can remember
what grazed this skin once before?

and yet, i have taught myself to find security
in the inevitable- you will return, with
tomorrow’s moon and tomorrow’s clear
black sky, so for now, i will rest soundly
under tonight with the notion that you too
are shivering under the same harvest moon.

Author's Note: if we can't share the distance, at least let us share the moon.

Oh how I love this. Not the sad inspiration for it, but the moon's empathy and company (I've found that and written of it my Half Moon poem) and the tender, poignancy of it. A favorite of mine. Brave and seeking closure, but without coldness or bitterness. the who else can remember particularly effective. Blessings.
