I Believe

by J. P. Davies

The dark tangled cutains pull back,
for there is no sleep in this house.
While the radio softly twinkles
some symphony or orchestration,
the ceiling reflects amber glow.

I believe.

I know there is something better,
than dancing before the seniority.
This world wasn't made for hire.
But we've chased the night away.

And now we work through the witching hour,
and scramble to color inside the lines.
While the children dream of escape,
and pray the night shift won't be theirs.

I believe...

That there is something different,
something special, waiting for me.
I can't walk tightropes, or balance
my future on the knife's edge.

The "real world" has come and served notice,
that it will have me before the end comes.
And so I sit, and pray for deliverance,
before the world chains me in a box.

I believe...

That man was not meant to be caged,
stuffed in a cubicle in a maze.
To be pressed out in carbon copy
triplicate human beings assembled.

There is a world that I will find,
for the betterment of my state of mind.
I know it's there but is hidden,
so I'll spend my life trying to find it.

Because...

I Believe.

Some excellent lines throughout this, and others that might be dropped or refined, such as: But we've chased the night away. Love the originality of the third stanza. All in all though, your message comes out loud n' clear. Although there are advantages of giving into the 9-5 world and working for someone else, as you've so wisely pointed out, there's a very deep downside to it as well that sadly suppresses part of us. Lucky is the man or woman who finds true happiness in their work, especially if they answer only to themselves.
