Shopping List

Shopping List

orange juice

cereal

milk… of human kindness?

            mother’s?

what soothes us more in these times –

            what smoothes  troubles,

            warm milk before bed,

land of milk and honey –

would we need more to ease

            our loss?

bread… for breaking,

             our daily,

             slang of money,

for which we want to be winners,

but who are we if not sharing,

             we well-bred, with bread-and-water,

shouldn’t we break the bread of life

            with other lives?

eggs… and on  whose theory rely –

            chicken first or last?

             a beginning to all, ovum,

but not all in one basket,

             lest on our faces,

we who fertilize then crack the shell,

            our Humpty-Dumpty world….

meat… the chicken last again,

            steer, hog,

            our choices of the flesh,

            consumed with conflict,

            what’s left after death,

            fellow beings,

            will we meet with them

            in the next life?

and how will they prepare us?

we are all meat, in the end…

vegetables

cheese

Since I am in a silly mood, my first thought was "It must take a really long time for Bruce to shop", but that aside, a creative idea for your poem

Clever and very wise breakdown. Really like how this goes way beyond the typical grocery list. Hat's off to ya!

Oh so clever! We should all check our shopping lists from time to time!
