Half Measure

by Karen Michelle

We squeezed ourselves
into versions of tomorrow;
loosening the choker of regret,
tightening the belt
of expectation.

The past, we sealed
in sandwich bags and
stored it safely
in the deepest recesses
of the kitchen freezer -

a cryogenic treasure
to be forgotten for the moment
and chipped from the ice of
yesterday's chronological remains
in the twilight years and
autumn of reminiscence.
