Hands of Strength by Maureen GlaudeI've held hands with courage
squeezed kindness from a nurse
discovered demerol rush in eyes
smiling strength to me
when needles, IV's, portacaths
lines and spinal taps invade
above and beyond the disease
humanity's the grandest drug
voices in gentle guidance
stirring confidence through ordeals
laughter over pain
and let's never forget
a prayer and two crossed fingers
never hurt
and go farther than any pills
to win the war
