Wattage (A Christmas Poem) by Bruce W Niedt
My neighbor, the resident lumiphile,
fancies himself the Beacon of Christmas,
his house dripping with icicle lights,
effigies of Santas and snowmen, backlit, inflated,
like overstuffed sentinels in the yard.
Rudolph on the roof, elves in the eaves,
luminescent candy canes sprouting up from the snow,
and bare trees spiderwebbed with motion lights.
My youngest asks why we dont have Christmas spirit,
like the Conners.
Seven-year-olds dont understand understated.
We keep a single candle, electric, in each window,
each candle dressed with a simple red bow.
Twenty windows, twenty candles, twenty bows.
I dont measure spirit in wattage.
Candles were in windows long before plastic Santas.
Id like to think my lights recall snowy Christmas Eves
when candles welcomed weary travelers to country inns,
with promises of good food, drink, and a warm, dry bed,
or the Christmas Eve even longer ago,
when the only light that mattered
came from a single star.

Posted by Maureen Glaude on 12/18/03 at 02:50 AM we're on the same theme tonight, it seems. One of our neighbour's house has been in the paper, on tv, and people drive over to see and hear his display (Xmas music outside) a huge plastic penguin at his gate, teddy bears and deer, etc. Mary and Joseph and Jesus, and tons of lights, dominate. I loved your poem, you sound like you've been down our street and I wondered too about why so garrish, but different strokes, I guess. |
Posted by Cathlyn Cartier on 12/18/03 at 03:09 AM I love to see Christmas light displays... tastifully done, in one theme! the multiple things is just too much! |
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 12/20/03 at 02:49 AM Subtle but excellent reflection on the mixed messages of Christmas Bruce. |
Posted by JD Clay on 12/20/03 at 06:53 PM A great expression of the commercialization of Christmas, Bruce. Best line, "I don't measure spirit in wattage". Happy Holidays!
