"You had your chance, you blew it!" by Jolie JordanI remember choking on a jawbreaker
when I was seven at my grandmas house
and my little brother ran to get her
as I turned blue from the neck up
I remember inhaling
without breathing in
Screaming,
without making a sound.
(the only thing coming out
being a slight wheezing of some sorts,
more of,
a pseudo-attempt at life.)
Seven years later
I swollowed another jawbreaker whole
this time hoping I'd turn blue
making sure my brother wasn't around
but it just slid down my throat
so I sat there and cried instead. 11/29/2003 Posted on 11/29/2003 Copyright © 2025 Jolie Jordan

| Posted by Glenn Currier on 07/28/09 at 01:47 AM I am still breathing very shallow from this poem. It is breathtaking and terrifying. I feel the sadness and the pain in it. I am grateful for the poet who shared it and wish her some of the good stuff. |
