A Child Prayed

by Robert Cameron Hazelton

Lost and lonely waif, orphan of war
Can’t understand what your family died for
Their corpses lie rotting in shallow repose
On battle-scarred plains, where no flower grows
They weren’t frenzied martyrs, broke no laws
Just hapless victims of a maniac’s cause
Now you are sleepless, alone in the night
Wondering why different people must fight
With a mind full of fear and a heart scarred by pain
You silently pray that mankind can abstain
From the wanton destruction you see everyday
So no other child must grow up this way

Excellent, sympathetic portrait. A poignant picture you paint with a gentle touch.
