Within the Woods October

by Scott M Pratchner

Along a path lost to years

Or purposely concealed

We came within the Woods October

Brave men of blade and shield

Oh, Everlost and Evermourn,

Strange denizens of the Wood

Lost is the pride that brought us here

Lost is the way to leave

Lost is the light to guide our hearts

Within the Woods October

Dead trees can whisper in this Wood

Sly guides to what we seek

To the place that spirits fear

Whose name men best not speak

Within this clearing lurks the tomb

Of a shunned and evil lord

His treasures falsely draw us near

Its peril we ignored

Oh, Everlost and Evermourn,

Strange denizens of the Wood

Lost is the pride that brought us here

Lost is the way to leave

Lost is the light to guide our hearts

Within the Woods October

Two fell wards to bar our way,

Or perhaps to hold inside?

One, to kindle He Who Sleeps

Two, a test of pride.

The first, we rent with blade and bow

Oh how we mourn that day

The second, as fools we passed with word

And capstone slid away.

Oh, Everlost and Evermourn,

Strange denizens of the Wood

Lost is the pride that brought us here

Lost is the way to leave

Lost is the light to guide our hearts

Within the Woods October

A blast of wickedness from within

That stole our years away

Like hell’s own furnace stokes the fire

And yet our greed held sway.

And then He came, a deeper black

Than void betwixt the stars

With mind and malice hot, and freed

His doom would now be ours

Oh, forgive these souls who foolish sought

Lost treasures of the Wood

Lost is the pride that brought us here

Lost is the way to leave

Lost is the light to guide our hearts

Within the Woods October

A feeling of the ancient, even in the title's word arrangement - a tragic tale of portent but no turning back. The Everlost chorus is wonderfully haunting and I like its repetition. Although this feels complete, it leaves a shudder for a ghastly epilogue. to my favs
