Musing on Mauritius by Maureen GlaudeMesmerizing Mauritius
originating with the Malays in the Middle Ages
was named for Prince Maurice of Nassau
Mauritius - once called the Îsle de France
the sound of the name always lured me
starting like my Christian name
but with exotic elevation
or was the title, like the word "morose,"
similar by sound to mine, and nothing more?
Mauritius, I discovered in my research
as a republic set within a ring
of coral reefs and once-active
volcanic mountains
a marketer of tea and sugar cane
(now there's a shared liking, for you
just a moment, I'll hot the pot, set out
the dainty sugar bowl)
a land steeped in the ancestry of Indian, Creole, Dutch
the languages, the crops
the clear azure over the coral shelf
the ring of risk of ancient lava bursts
an enticing namesake island
that finds me
wanting to make it mine
Mauritius
mesmerizing

Author's Note: This is not an exercise in vanity, but the result of a class exercise in which we were to write a poem inspired by integration of our first names with a country, somehow making a parallel of the two. We had some intriguing results in class with the various names.

Posted by Kristine Briese on 11/01/03 at 02:17 AM I'll bet that class was interesting. The flow here is, if you'll forgive me, mesmerizing in its rhythms and "M"-sounds. Nicely done. |
Posted by Philip F De Pinto on 11/04/03 at 12:03 PM what's in a name? perhaps nothing, perhaps everthing. in this case I suspect it is the latter and Maureen certainly has an air of the exotic and venturefull. |
