inches.

by Andrew S Adams

she broke a smile, what
a beautiful bag of wrinkles.
this face has seen the rise of
several young men, several
midlife crises, several crazy
old men,
and one that couldnt hold on as long as she.

she's seen the rise of three young boys,
from cradle to legal,
from baby to brat to brash to
being where she is right now.

i broke a smile, the bags under my eyes
were running purple, tired, and i was drained.
this face has seen more than i can comprehend
her ever seeing, if i werent to know this house
as my own.

i've seen the fall of broken hearts,
from heaven to the gutter,
from up to low to getting better
to being where i am right now.

and where are we right now?
i'm standing here, embraced with her.
and standing next to her,
being a few inches taller than this 86 year old girl,
i have more to learn about seeing things,
espescially for the fact that l
ife is often more than a matter of inches.
