I don't want to be by Michele Schottelkorb
I dont want to be WE
I want to be ME
I told you this last week
Dont you hear ME?
The dismantling of our little family
Five years in the making
The pain that permeates
Is gold for the taking
Struggles and tears
Mean nothing in the end
A black-holed heart
Is too difficult to mend
If I could
Take all of it back
Id do it all different
Id plan an attack
On those that would corrupt
Our little endeavor
Id take back my family
And compromise never
But, alas, never is here
And all I have left is one little tear

One of those sentiments that defies the school of 'positive thinking' - but for most of us, I believe it's true.
Don't know if this is personal experience - whether it is or not, it's utterly convincing and emotive.

Posted by Ashok Sharda on 10/29/03 at 02:23 AM 'But, alas, never is here', this realization should lead one to yet another realization and that is that despite all the painfully alive associations whats left is here part of now and one dies from moment to moment as one lives from moment to moment. And its always good to live in the present with the present rather than in the past with the past. Though the piece is titled as 'I don't want to be' , paradoxically this very poem is part of the struggle to BE.'Struggles and tears Mean nothing in the end', yet another realization, rather application of logic, proof of the presence of the intellectual self despite all the emotions.
