topic: in the darkness

by Rachelle Howe

you slithered on your belly, that
dragon scaled impediment.
i had

crushed your skull, bent you
beneath the barbwire of my double tinged
eyes, and you, you fell there
limber and flayed. i had
kept you, an animal, in that steel cage
of my stomach
swallowed in the evengreen.
i wondered, then, how long
i could hold you

captive, in this light, in these frays
you crawled toward the door

open, open...

your fingers, you found, would work
only under the intense strain of
the capsized events, and i
had released you

to your demise.
i watched you sleep, that night
a feeble child, curled, and
one with your venom.
i had engorged you
and kept you tied to yourself
those bedposts of regret...

you thought i had vanished
from eyesight, hindsight, from the
encampment of my teeth and jaws.

but i was there, in the darkness,
waiting for you to wake up
and turn around.

Quite the lively and intriguing piece of poetry. Certainly sparked my imagination...I want to know more.

i have to say this is my least favourite out of the new bunch...it seems to be lacking something...can't put my finger on it...
