To the Enlightenment Junkies

by Max Bouillet

I have a bobble-head Buddha
on the dashboard of my mini-van.
The fat jolly fellow watches me
when I flip off jerks in 4X4 trucks.

But when I get too angry,
he leaps from his perch
climbs awkwardly up my seatbelt
an slaps me quite senseless.

On one particular slapping session,
I heard the crunch of fenders
and everything stopped.

(I thought, “This is it!
I have attained enlightenment!”)

Everything went dark save a single light,
a light at the end of a long tunnel…
I traveled to it.
There before me stood Jesus
and I said, “Is this it! Is this enlightenment!”

Apparently not,
for He took His own name in vain,
wielded His cross like a Louisville Slugger
and batted me back down the tunnel.

It was at that moment,
in a full body cast,
(Buddha had undone my seatbelt)
that I realized… enlightenment sucks.

ha! i'd say that realization itself is pretty darn close to enlightenment ;) i love the imagery of Buddah slapping someone senseless almost as much as i love Jesus "wielding his cross like a Louisville Slugger" (however figuratively it may be intended) great job!

*chuckles* you've had some interesting religious experiences Max ... I'd say "God help you" but I fear what that may bring upon you ... Nice one Max :)

LMAO Max. Now I don't feel so bad about no longer driving and not having any religious related statuettes nearby.

Your poem gives new meaning to the term, welcome to the club, hehe! You could say, enlightenment is not all it's cracked up to be, but it still outweighs the alternative. Good stuff, Max. Peace...

this is freaking hilariously funny. why are we starting a clut for me? i mean, we seriously should start one in your name instead.

Heh, this is great. Love the imagery of Buddha awkwardly climbing and then slapping someone senseless. Same with the Jesus verse. Funny. Very funny. :)

Such a brilliant way to equate the quest for 'enlightenment' with a plain old 'reality check.' That's pretty much what it is in the end; maybe some people can be moved to peaceful acceptance by something like that.

Your insightful POTD enlightens me like an upper cut, Br Max. Congrats, my friend. :)

Wow, I needed that to help me wake up this morning. Congrats on POTD. I keep visualizing this poem and giggling to myself. Thanks for the insanity.

If nothing else, at least your enlightening poem has seen the light of day. I like your transcendental drift, Max. Hip, hip on POTD!

Great writing, literate and pertinent - driving a vehicle and the highway are both excellent metaphors for modern life. The very relevant perception is that "God" is just another word for reality and all symbols are merely false gods that inevitably invite the mocking laughter in this poem.

made me smile this Christmas morning - wonderfully visual!
