Catalyst

by Karen Michelle

She
is the beginning
of an endless horizon -
eyes searching out
the mid-winter
break of clouds,
sky, never touching
Earth.

I found it that day,
an interruption
of rain-soaked afternoons
where regret held its breath
for just a second -
long enough to let me
slip between feigned "i love yous"
and meet
Her.

I miscounted the years
between birth and
present existence -
mistook the beauty and words
for something midway
between twenty and thirty -
excited by the familiar reverberation
of thought in foreign accents,
miles away from home.

((seeing self in other))

Her growth
against mine is statistically
six years delayed;
But numbers, they lie -
And her thoughts & words
drag me out of this
stagnancy of self
to turn darkness into light.

Not one, but two now
against empty promises
and declarations of adoration,
we are.

And though the familiarity
of my daily surroundings
fades faster than the sun
in extended winter,
at last, i settle safely
into this skin
and offer these words
for mass consumption.

A beautiful and thought provoking poem. What a wonderful tribute to another.
