Little Orphan Annie

by Quinn Vokes

The muse has kept me up tonight
I'm glad to say, with much delight.
Visions of sailboats on a breezy summer's day
Fill my mind, and make me want to play.

I feel like a schoolgirl, so squeaky is my laugh.
Let's go catch some lightning bugs
We'll fill millions of jars with them
They'll light our path.
Come with me my friend, my imagination is
Running wild.

Quick, we must hurry
(The morning light is coming)
Before Madame Garner arrives with her coat so furry
And the magic of the night is spoiled with running.
The sounds of children trying to
Make it on time
For daily inspection
To save one more beating.

Meanwhile, I'll stay here in a place
Of my own creation
Who says you can't buy happiness?
I bought this pencil and pad of paper.
Whoever invented them were geniuses.

This verbalization of the 'magic of the night' is beautiful. Thanks to you and to the one who invented 'pencil and pad of paper'.:)

What a muse Billy is! The images in your poem are delightful and the story irresistible.
