red balloon

by Kimberly Bare

floating
fading on the horizon
against a cerulean sky

at once both
bereft of hope
and full of a joy
briefly bridled
by a child's hand

an ephemeral reminder
of all that was the
rapture and loss
of innocence

freely floating
fading on the horizon

This is truly brilliant. It is filled with a tension that brings two seemingly estranged emotions together in an extremely moving way. Top-notch!

Beautiful in word and flow. I especially like the third verse. I can just see the child crying about her loss, maybe a first lesson in grieving. Lovely poem, Kimberly.
