Human Carousel

by Cathlyn Cartier

Spinning,
like a human top,
arms outstretched
fingers splayed.
The beads in her braids
a kaleidoscope of color.
Soft humming vocalizations ,
growing louder,
increasing in pitch;
becoming the feverish melody of a living carousel.

Suddenly she stops,
Grabbing hold,
pulling you close,
Her eyes directly in front of yours.
As if imploring you to release the thoughts that are trapped inside,
With no means of escape.

Author's Note: Another attempt to put into words my reflections and observations from my experiences working with children with Autism. Another poem about this child is "Peering into Your World" Thank you John Adams for your honest critique of the earlier version.

Difficult subject matter to try and articulate. This piece is stunning in motion and detail and evokes a strong emotion... great read.

So eloquent in depiction! Reminds me of the autistic student I had when teaching sixth grade. He was a fascinating study in human development but more than that a very human being needing a great deal of compassion. He later accepted Christ. His parents were so pleased with that. It helped so much in dealing with him. He attended a university in D.C. where he was especially taught by understanding professors. He was brilliant in some respects.

Written with true insight and keen observation. A lot of people will be so thankful for your work with those kids. An excellent read.
