After the Battle Cry by Brian Francis
Those of us who were children
When the war had just begun
Remember the stories well, my friend,
Of the battles that wed won
We were fighting for a cause
We knew God was on our side
We were fighting in the fields
While the politicians lied
And death was all around
You see these battles that we fight
Were told are for a cause
They tell us of the childrens plight
They tell us not to pause
But to keep on pushing for to win
And if we dont to die
Thats the only way my friend
After the battle cry
I remember well the day my friend
Our first battle had begun
They were coming up the hill
They were crawling on the ground
We fired many rounds my friend
Yet they were pushing on
But after a long battle
They turned and then were gone
And death was all around
You see these battles that we fight
Were told are for a cause
They tell us of the childrens plight
They tell us not to pause
But to keep on pushing for to win
And if we dont to die
Thats the only way my friend
After the battle cry
The planes came flying over head
The town it soon was gone
So we went down to the town
to see what had been done
Men, women, and children
Were lying on the ground
Pain was just a part of the scene
that we had found
and death was all around
You see these battles that we fight
Were told are for a cause
They tell us of the childrens plight
They tell us not to pause
But to keep on pushing for to win
And if we dont to die
Thats the only way my friend
After the battle cry

Posted by Agnes Eva on 08/26/03 at 12:44 AM it reads and flows very well- good construction. i feel that the emotional content, especially in the climactic penultimate stanza, could have been turned up a few notches; it retreats at the end to drive in its message, which is good, but it should be retreating from the very jaws of horror, since you are talking of war. just my thoughts, maybe influenced by today's gore-driven rated R films. |
