Dragonfly vs. 737

by Madeline Pestolesi

A dragonfly,
Impressed by the size
Of my airplane,
Buzzes around the wing:
Checking things out.
If I opened the emergency door
And let the dragonfly have the empty seat next to me
Would he know where he was
When we arrived in Portland?
Or would he stay
Hidden in his seat
Desperate to go back to California?
Or would he not care
And go find something to eat?
I hope he doesn't eat
A sausage, egg and cheese biscuit sandwich
Like I got at Wendy's
Because it was disgusting.
Maybe we could be friends
And he could sleep in a kleenex bed
And live on my tv.
He would love Alaska.

While I think all these things
Within a half second
The dragonfly is gone
Taking away my fantasy.

I really like poems such as this that employ man/animal interaction. Thought provoking piece!

Great snapshot of an emotion and thought. Excellent manipulation of verse to convey the scene to the reader. Splendid read.
