Metempsychosis by Beth K HannahI shed my exoskeleton with
It's brittle wings
Dried shell
And lifted myself out
Of the darkened cage.
I lay in the sunlight
Eyelashes all a flutter
Fingertips drying to gold
I felt exquisite
As the wind touched my
Newly violet wings
You were shocked
To see them bend
And twist.
My antennae picked up
No scent of you.
You left me and
My sacrifice alone
You left me adrift
With wings I can barely use
Glossy skin
I can't touch
A sense of fragility
I have never felt before.
I turn to seek safety
In the silence surrounding
Not even a dandelion
Will help me now. 08/07/2003 Author's Note: "will you take my dying for granted, now that I'm awake. They keep calling through the crawling underneath my skin." - mars volta
