What's It All For

by Thomas K. Hunt

I got slapped in the face by reality
Fate hit me once again
They say that shit just happens
I just never know when

It's like opening up a letter
Picking up the phone
You don't know what's around the corner
You never know until you're shown

I look to myself for answers
But who am I to know?
I'm just like you; I'm out of the blue
I can't win, place, or show

I'm on a one way street to nowhere
With an empty tank of gas
I've got to get out and push
Just to make this journey last

I'm looking to the horizon
As far as I can see
There's no end in sight, it's an awful fright
I keep running into me

The empty road behind me
Lays littered with my debris
And this road stretched out before me
Is going to bring me to my knees

It's a lifelong road trip
With no means to the end
It's a jaunt to the future
One I'll never comprehend

Good update to the 'on the road of life' theme. I especially like this stanza; really hit home: I’m on a one way street to nowhere With an empty tank of gas I’ve got to get out and push Just to make this journey last

I love the road imagery and the life analogy. Great work. Thanks for sharing.

An introspective vision with a wonderful message, Thomas. An age old question in the title. Peace..

Maybe we're just not suppose to know what it's all for, for if we did, you would have never wrote such a superb poem.
