Ring Ring Ring

by Christopher Shin

I just talked to Death today
on the telephone, and she asked
me how was my day, today.

I told her it could be better,
and she asked me why?
Well better days are those that
cannot be savored,
and the only thing I know how to do
is watch.

She smiles to herself a knowing smile,
and says that the best things in life
are things that do not worry you
so.

I asked her if she would call me
back later, and she told me maybe soon.
Or maybe in a couple of years or so.
She laughs and says hey who knows
what the future brings.

I smirk and think to myself a private
little thought that makes me want to smile.
A single thought about how others would think
if I told them I talked to Death
on the telephone.

They would probably try to help me or try
to send me to a hospital.
Well anyways she began to speak.
She tells me that life isn't easy,
and a journey is what is in front of me.

I asked her what is it like
to walk in the Sunless Lands?
Is it dark and scary?
Or is it happy and fun like
the Candyland Game that I could
not get because it cost so much when
I was young.

Her smile warms me from the inside out, and
she says that it is what you wish to see,
and I can only see it when my time comes.
Well she told me good bye.

And I said if you wish visit me anytime,
but don't visit me while I'm a sleep.

Author's Note: I wrote this poem when I was young. Very young. It was about a friend who tried to understand why I was so sad all the time. She made me smile and ignore the darkness for a while.
