First Steps

by Kate Demeree

Do not be afraid, wounded heart
I intend you no harm
I will not shackle or chain you
There is no need to claim you
Nor you to claim me
What we are is what we are
It is enough just to be
Here in this moment
Wrapped around each other
Breathing each other’s breaths
Tasting the sweet-salt taste of life
Heartbeat to beating heart
Though I would block your retreat
If you allow me to
As you said to me
I will not do anything to you
You do not want me to do

I don't recall when I took my First Steps, but somehow they culminated to walking to my computer and reading this wonderful poem.
