melody unknown

by Devon E Mattys

You are a melody.
You are a song
running through my head
to which I do not know the words.
Some ironic, minor tune,
haunting me with its beauty,
it rolls over and over,
a player piano unable to stop--
over and over
until it's seduced my mind enough
and my memory goes numb.
You've paralyzed me wholly.
What images I've left--what memories--
escape me.
Where were we then?
Were we ever young?
Can you remember me?
Or am I to you just another
small black dot
on a sheet of music?
