leave the light on

by Andrew S Adams

where was i when it all came down?
where were you when the smoke cleared?
was it all the shock and awe-
and that,
inspired by fear,
caused you to start pointing guns
like fingers
towards the scapegoats of our generation?

Were you sitting, drinking morning tea
waiting for the breeze to gently call?
was it a shock, a thought of hate and fear
when you saw the towers fall?
what were we thinking, so blind in our
dangerous self pity and puffing our chests
boasting that we will not fail in this 'war'
this one, that cant be won.

massacre your pretty piece;
the world is not so young, and the fears
and biases are deep seeded,
never to be broken-
like the will of a world power
not knowing the meaning of 'softspoken'
brandish your guns and backtrack
throwing bombs and wars and anti-terror
terrorist action, we call these things
freedom operations.
yet we wonder how we've become so enslaved
to a government;
whose actions will only lead to another big fall;
and the forces of the world, closing in on you
closing out the hope that we will ever be safe
but always, leaving the light on- just in case.
