Legacy

by Adrian Calhoun

In the shadows of great writers,
Shakespeare, Lord Byron, Burns, and Frost,
I am but a squire.
Ever learning this craft,
which they perfected centuries ago.
My words in some ways,
a tribute to their legacy.

Can I write the words
in a way to do them justice,
and preserve their values.

I am proud to be a Scotsman.
Having read Robert Burns,
I am even more so.
Will my words someday
have the same effect on someone else,
or will my words fade away,
as the sunsets of every yesterday?

When my once beating heart stills,
if only in one memory,
I pray the words forever remain.

Only then will it be known if I helped
to keep the legacy alive.
Or perhaps, started my own.

A proud Scotsman, taking pride in his poetry. You express the desire of most poets I think. May you indeed pass on a legacy of thoughtful poetry that stirs some hearts and minds of future generations.
