Gifts

by Kate Demeree

Gifts

With silent trepidation she reached inside the box
Drew forth his essence
Which had been trapped
By chains and locks
Freed it from its prison
Breathed it back to life
Showed him how to live again
With joy
She eased
His strife

He gave to her
Something she had thought she’d lost
Gave it to her freely
Did not count the cost
Learning how to walk

Today they share the sunshine
Tonight they share the moon
When it comes the morrow
They may sing a different tune

For now they are together…
Today they love and play
No promise of forever
Neither bound
No one asked
To stay

As the night, so are your words tender.
