somethings I love about you, some things I try and accept

by Lisa-Dawn Sparling

Fishing rods,
Bait,
You yelling,
Trying to untangle the line.
Your beat up old ford,
Gravel roads,
Chantrel mushrooms in buckets,
The smell of moss.
Cigar smoke,
Ashes on your shirts…..

Not ever wanting to piss you off,
Always scared to get you started.
Always wanting to see you love her,
The way that she loves you.
Wanting you to be a role model,
So I knew how a man should treat me.

Pyramids,
Sauerkraut and perogies,
The smell of the mill in your clothes,
Your stories,
The love you had for running,
Your strong work ethic.
Your forever spinning brain,
Full of knowledge,
Full of curiosity,
Still showing scars from your father..

Wishing you looked at me when I was a kid,
The way you look at your grandchildren.
Wondering why you waited until I was grown,
Wishing you loaded me with confidence,
So I didn’t have to search for it in the wrong places.

Knowing that you do love me,
Knowing that you realize you made mistakes,
Knowing that you’re trying.
Finally realizing that is there is such a thing,
as unconditional love.

Author's Note: pyramids: my dad always had cardboard pyramids around as I was growing up. He would put things in the pyramid - it is supposed to perserve thinks...I guess it was my dad's exploration to the unknown..I should ask him more about it one day.

Indeed a truly well thought out, all inclusive expression of parent/child relationship. This is truly touching, Lisa.

it's really a mixture of different things. can be weird sometimes of the things we like, hate and try to accept.

Very personal, yet surprisingly accessible. Still, if you want it to be a public piece, I would expand some of the images, make them more explicit. Pyramids stands out as something that most of us are just going to have to skip over, for lack of common experience.
