When Nylons Were Scarce

by Jane E Pearce

Nylons were scarce
when Winston spoke

of "Britian's finest hour,"
and the days raged

all night from lethal
belligerent bursts

birthed in the sky. Love
so urgent then, when

life hung over a precipice,
dangling white knuckled

on boats and in trenches.
You can still smell it,taste it

decades later, when the band
plays"White Cliffs of Dover,"

or" We'll Meet Again"-
songs of those frantic years

when Jews were gassed,
and nylons were scarce.

Author's Note: Just a reminder of the horrors of the first war I remember. The Iraq war is the 5th I have witnessed. When does it stop?WW2, I remember so much about as it lasted almost 4 years. There were the blackouts, the food and gas stamps, bond drives, rolling bandages, and the gold stars in windows of homes that had lost someone. There were a lot of them. Let's pray somehow mankind can find peace.

And what would WWII have been without Vera Lynne singing White Cliffs Of Dover and We'll Meet Again Some Sunny Day? Thanks for the reminder Jane.

Really a strong direct statement, and amazing how the light film of inviting, scarce nylon lures the reader into the horrific experience. It was all part of it..."love was so urgent then"... the last two lines are very very hard to bear... as they were then.
