dove

by Michele Schottelkorb

under the pale moonlight... she softly watches
the shadows form a watchtower...
under the stars of yesteryear
she thinks on a distant life

beneath her shaded eyes... a blood tear falls
into the crystal lake of life
off into the darkness she stares
unabashedly afraid of tomorrow...
yet, sadistically wishing for the next trial

her thoughts transfer the distant life~
one she has only dreamt of in her hazy wakefulness,
~to present... as the blackbird watches protectively
she instinctively falls to her shame ridden knees
yet, she has not realized she no longer must
abide by these rules

regaining her balance... she dreams on this distant life where clouds form castles
and oceans send ripples of love through the hardened Earth

an earthquake threatens the "sanctuary"
which took years to create...
walls crumble to an untimely death
as her soul walks the tightrope of sanity

the assassin roars out of tune
no longer wanted here...
but never truly gone
unless
the circle of serenity protects the white dove
and delivers her essence from this torture...

who takes that chance?
who dares to cross the line...
to save the damsel in distress?

who, but she...
must fight strong... must survive
must love and be loved
like the white witch who hung
she will be absolved another day
and see another sunset... and breathe another scent of life
and love another more than herself
if he exists

and, the moonlight is pale tonight...
and the Earth is hardened... but learning to absorb
the love of the ocean
and the blackbird soars above the tender heart
whilst the assassin vanishes
and the soul regains place...

and the trueness allows her to live again
and love again
and smile again...

your words have a way of igniting my own melancholy and how can one not become enamored of this coupling? " whilst the assasin vanishes and the soul regains place "
