a gift for you

by Lisa-Dawn Sparling

I plant this tree for you because I love you.
Because I miss you
Because I do not want anyone to ever forget you.

I put the soil around its roots to give it nutrients
Like you once gave to me
Like I hope I gave to you

I want to watch it grow till it almost touches the sky
So I know that it can almost touch you
So my love for you can reach you higher

May each branch signify someone’s life you touched
And may a new leaf grow every time that person hears your laughter
Or remembers your smile

As the seasons change and the leaves fall
I will see the tree grow stronger
I will see our sons grow taller

The crimson leaves will dance in the wind
Gentle like our soft kisses
Gentle like my hands touching your face when I had to say good-bye.

I hope that this tree is here for the next ten thousand years
Even when our life is a faded memory
Even when I am up there with you watching it grow.

The landscape forever changed
Because I miss you
Because no one will ever forget you.

One of the best tributes and use of tree metaphor I've ever read. I'm glad Wendy steered me towards your poetry.
