Status Symbol Land

by A.M. Demarco

An SUV swills gasoline, oil, war
as it top-heav(y) heaves ar(ou)nd
the many curled, subdivided street corners
me(a)nt to discou(r)ag(e) random
madcap motorists from invading
private estates.

Te(n)derly t(o)ssed (t)ogather in
(wh)ooping steel c(a)ge backsea(t),
future good little consumers
are numbed b(y) the (o)verhead, (u)nanimous
drug-of-choice: television.

Fragile potential mindscapes
never had a chance;
b(o)mbarded (w)ith (n)ame-brands
extoling the conformity of
appearance, art, sex, ideas.

Author's Note: Suburbia - not just a place, but a state of mind. Written after being distracted by the simpsons while trying to drive behind an SUV.

While I disagree with the premise of some of this, I basically agree with the emphatic "you are not what you own". Clever! (Parents are responsible for what their children watch and hear and relate too!)

A fascinating combination of messages. Much truth in this, especially about little minds. Thank you.
