Colder than Winter by Megan HarveyWith the coming of fall, you left,
(The last Indian summer of my youth gone with you)
And I fell into a grayness
Permeating the bitter sunshine.
Your absence a frigid whisper
Frosting the ground and my heart.
So I bundle up against the cold,
Though I've never felt a winter colder than your shoulder.
I build a snowman in your image,
Placing buttons of coal on its chest
To remind me what your heart was made of. 03/12/2003 Author's Note: I'm not very fond of this piece. Written a few months ago, it seems to lack . . . something. A bit too melodramatic? Also, the "so" beginning line 7 seems a forced informality. Needless to say, this one is needing revision, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Posted by Wayne Tate on 07/08/11 at 04:43 AM I think the "so" in line 7 is the exact break that this piece needs. The first 6 stanza gives me the background and setting (beautifully written by the way) and lines 7 - 11 provide the extraordinary aftermath (just as brilliant). I would consider this piece to be perfect, but alas, we do create and live within our own perception of flaws, don't we? I'm glad you let this one go. Thank you so much for posting this. It's quite remarkable. |
